오즈의 마법사 시리즈는 총 14편으로 구성되어있다. 1편 오즈의 위대한 마법사(The Wonderful Wizard of Oz)는 1900년에 출판되어 2만 1천부가 팔렸다. 다음 해는 총 3만 5천부가 초판 매진 되었다. 1편을 소재로 한 뮤지컬로 성공을 거두었다. 그러면서 13편을 더 쓰게 된다. 1939년 개봉된 MGM 영화 오즈의 마법사 (The Wizard of Oz)에 힘입어 이 소설은 미국 대중 문화에서 가장 유명한 작품 중 하나가 되었고 여러 나라의 언어로 번역되었다.
봄이 1919년 죽고 미망인은 오즈 시리즈를 펴낼 수 있도록 다른 작가에게 허락한다. 아직까지 다른 작가들이 쓰고 있으며 많은 연극과 영화(대부분의 사람들이 보았고 지금까지 가장 사랑하는 영화), 라디오와 텔레비전 쇼, 장난감, 인형, 게임, 클럽, 대회, 컴퓨터 소프트웨어, 그리고 많은, 많은 다른 제작물들이 그 후 나왔다. 한 세기가 지난 오늘날에도 오즈 유행은 새로운 이야기와 새로운 영상물, 새로운 상품들로 줄곧 커가고 있다.
도로시와 오즈의 마법사 - Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz is the fourth book set in the Land of Oz written by L. Frank Baum and illustrated by John R. Neill. It was published on June 18, 1908 and reunites Dorothy with the humbug Wizard from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900). This is one of only two of the original fourteen Oz books (the other being The Emerald City of Oz (1910), to be illustrated with watercolor paintings.
Baum, having resigned himself to writing a series of Oz books, set up elements of this book in the prior Ozma of Oz (1907).[1] He was not entirely pleased with this, as the introduction to Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz opens with the protest that he knows many tales of many lands, and hoped that children would permit him to tell them those tales.[2]
Written shortly after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and around the time Baum moved to California, the book starts with an earthquake in California. Dorothy and others are swallowed up by cracks in the earth, and fall into an underground cavern, where they begin their adventures.
Very little of the story?six of the twenty chapters?actually takes place in Oz.[3] As in Ozma of Oz before it, and in some of the books after, Oz is not the land where the adventures take place, but the land the characters are seeking as a refuge from adventure.[4]
